Driving TCM Internationalisation through Scientific Standards and Clinical Innovation

Hong Kong is establishing itself as a global leader in the promotion of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Dr. Vincent Chung, Commissioner for Chinese Medicine Development of Health Bureau, explains that the Government Chinese Medicines Testing Institute employs advanced technology, such as DNA testing and microscopic identification, to ensure the authenticity and high quality of herbal products. These methodologies are documented in the Hong Kong Chinese Materia Medica Standards, which already covers over 350 herbs and is recognized internationally by the American Herbal Pharmacopeia and various ISO documents. Furthermore, as a WHO Collaborating Centre, Hong Kong actively promotes these standards through international forums to increase its global influence in TCM regulation.

Building on this foundation of standardized quality, Prof. Bian Zhaoxiang, Hospital Chief Executive, emphasizes that the Chinese Medicine Hospital of Hong Kong serves as a vital platform for internationalisation. First, the hospital will develop the Hong Kong model for clinical service, targeting diseases that are not effectively addressed by existing healthcare systems. Second, it will conduct more clinical research to enhance the clinical evidence regarding the efficacy, safety, and standards of TCM. Finally, the hospital functions as an interdisciplinary educational hub, providing a training platform for practitioners and fostering collaboration among experts from different fields.
