A centuries-old wellness practice rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has resurfaced online, captivating health enthusiasts around the world. Known as ear seeding, this holistic treatment is said to help with everything from chronic pain and insomnia to anxiety, depression, and stress, and it’s currently trending across social media platforms.

What is ear seeding?

Ear seeding is a form of “auriculotherapy”, a treatment that targets specific pressure points on the ear believed to correspond to different parts of the body.

Small “ear seeds” - tiny black beads or natural seeds, are placed on these points using surgical tape to gently stimulate them.

The technique, while relatively new in its modern form, is inspired by acupuncture.

Practitioners claim that by stimulating these pressure points, energy or “qi” can be balanced throughout the body.

In TCM philosophy, this energy flow is vital for maintaining physical and emotional wellbeing.

The difference between acupuncture and ear seeding

Acupuncture involves inserting ultra-thin needles at specific points across the body to restore energy balance and relieve discomfort.

In Western medicine, it’s believed to stimulate nerves, muscles, and connective tissue, promoting blood flow and releasing the natural painkillers.

Ear seeding follows a similar principle, but without needles.

When the seeds are placed on particular areas of the ear lobe and outer ear, they correspond to different body regions.

Stimulating these exact points can, according to practitioners, trigger a healing response and help relieve symptoms of various conditions.

How is it done?

Before applying the ear seeds, the area is disinfected to prevent infections. The small beads are then positioned and taped in place for two to three days before being removed.

It’s important to allow the skin to breathe between treatment sessions, ensuring that the tissue remains healthy and irritation-free.
