People under the age of 65 in Sweden who have received a first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine will be given a different vaccine for their second dose, with a so-called mRNA vaccine such as Pfizer/Biontech or Moderna, the Swedish Health Agency announced on Tuesday.
“In view of the very rare but serious side effect reported after vaccination with Vaxzevria [the AstraZeneca COVID-19 Vaccine], the Swedish Public Health Agency considers that the vaccine cannot be generally recommended for persons under 65 years of age,” a Swedish Health Agency spokesperson said in a phone call to CNN, following a statement issued by the agency
The Swedish Public Health Agency said both it, and the European Medicines Agency (EMA,) considered AstraZeneca to be effective in preventing Covid-19 disease and reducing serious illness and death, and will continue to use it to vaccinate people over the age of 65 years old.
Sweden paused the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine in March after reports of rare blood clots among people vaccinated with the shot.
A mix and match trial was expanded in the UK last week to examine whether different coronavirus vaccines can safely be used for two-dose regimens, with results expected by summer 2021.

Iran continues to record its highest ever coronavirus cases since the start of the pandemic after 25,490 infections and 395 deaths were reported over 24 hours on Tuesday.
Tuesday’s numbers were not the highest, however. Over the past week, the country has been reporting record-breaking cases daily.
Daily case numbers have almost quadrupled since January -- when an average of 6,000 daily cases were reported -- and tripled since last month.
The total number of Covid-19 cases in Iran now stand at 2,286,927 while deaths have reached 67,525 people. Iran is one of the worst hit countries in the Middle East.
The health ministry said 257 cities and towns across the country have been categorized as "Red Zones" -- where a semi-lockdown is in place, and non-essential businesses closed.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ruling political party has said it will no longer hold large election rallies in the state of West Bengal, citing a “difficult phase of the pandemic.”
Instead, Modi’s party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), will hold “small public gatherings," with a cap of 500 people, according to a BJP statement released Monday.
West Bengal, one of five Indian states where elections are currently being held, has seen tens of thousands in attendance at rallies organized by the BJP and by the Trinamool Congress Party – who currently rules the state government.
West Bengal, which has never had a BJP government, has become a key focus for the party. However, the elections are being held amid the country’s second wave.
On Tuesday, India reported a 6th consecutive day of more than 200,000 new Covid-19 cases, according to a CNN tally of figures from the Indian health ministry.
The country has reported nearly 1.5 million new cases in the past seven days alone.
India’s health ministry also reported 1,761 new deaths, the highest in almost 10 months.
In West Bengal, a total of 668,353 total cases have been reported, including 10,606 deaths and 53,418 active cases, according to the Indian Ministry of Health on Tuesday.
Rahul Gandhi, the leader of India's main opposition party, said the Indian National Congress had suspended all public rallies in West Bengal as of Sunday.
The Chief Minister of West Bengal and founder of the Trinamool Congress Party Mamata Banerjee said at a rally on Monday that she would hold short meetings considering the ongoing pandemic.
Banerjee also accused the central government for inadequately preparing for India’s current surge, saying that Modi “ has not done anything to stop covid nor let anyone else do anything to stop it” and that “the prime minister is responsible.”
The Trinamool Congress Party has also appealed to the country's election commission to combine the remaining electoral phases into one day, due to the surge in cases. If that strategy was approved, it would expedite the election process and eliminate the need for further election rallies.
For now, the election commission is currently moving forward with a phased election strategy.
West Bengal has a total of eight polling days, with three remaining. The next date of polling is on April 22.

As much as China may want to promote its domestically-produced Covid-19 vaccines, it has to face reality.
Last month, Beijing issued a new policy making it easier for foreigners to apply for a visa to China if they had received a Chinese vaccine -- raising concerns among experts, who warned it risked setting a dangerous precedent which could leave the world separated into vaccine silos.
There was also a practical problem: in many countries, including the United States, it is impossible to get a Chinese vaccine because they have not been approved for use by regulators.
With about half of adults in the US having received at least one Covid-19 shot, many travelers eligible to enter China -- either Chinese citizens or foreigners who managed to obtain a visa -- were left unsure whether the vaccine they received would be deemed sufficient to travel to China.
China's embassy in Washington finally provided some clarity in a recent statement, outlining what tests travelers to China who have received one of the US-approved vaccines -- Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson -- should get in order to be approved to enter the country.
With China largely back to business and infection rates low, it is likely many will soon attempt that process, particularly as the number of vaccinated continues to rise in the US.
China considers Pfizer data: Last month, China launched its own version of a vaccine passport, the International Travel Health Certificate (ITHC), to enable immunized people to travel more freely. The country is also moving in the direction of approving more vaccines, including foreign-made ones, which would make it easier for Chinese living overseas and foreigners hoping to travel to China to sign up to the ITHC.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Chinese officials have been scrutinizing clinical-trial data for the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, which could be approved for domestic use before July.

France is introducing one of Europe’s first Covid-19 vaccine passport initiatives, the authorities said this week, as countries across the continent seek to facilitate travel by the summer.
The initiative will at first be for use on domestic flights to Corsica and then on longer ones to France’s overseas territories, the government said in a statement on Monday. The ultimate goal is to make the digital certificates applicable to travel to other countries.
Starting this week, people in France can get a digitally certified record of coronavirus test results, either by downloading and printing a certificate or by adding it to a smartphone app that the authorities have used for contact tracing. It will be expanded to include proof of vaccination starting on April 29.
The information — such as the type of test or vaccine, along with the date it was administered and by whom — will be digitally recorded with a kind of QR code that France uses to certify official documents and that the police, customs officers, airlines and others will be able to quickly scan.
“This method therefore avoids possible fraud related to the presentation of fake test results,” the government said in the statement.
The digital certificates are part of the European Union’s push for a Digital Green Certificate to enable travelers to move freely around the bloc if they carry proof of a negative test, vaccination or recovery from the virus

Thousands of people have been left stranded in the streets of Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, each night since Saturday, as the authorities strictly enforced curfew restrictions that have been criticized by human rights groups.
Police officers have set up roadblocks on several of Nairobi’s major highways at night, and told drivers on the roads after the 8 p.m. curfew that they would have to camp there until the curfew ended at 4 a.m.
The roadblocks caused extensive traffic snarls in the city. Videos posted on social media showed parents stranded in traffic while trying to rush children to the hospital and high school students who were unable to get home.
The police measures have infuriated many Kenyans, who say the 8 p.m. deadline does not give them enough time to get home from work through Nairobi’s often gridlocked roads, some of which are undergoing major construction. Twitter users in the country expressed their anger using the hashtag #UnlockOurCountry.
Human rights organizations have urged the government to review the enforcement methods and to uphold citizens’ rights.
Covid-19 “prevention is reliant on adequate communication that affirms citizens’ role and works with health professionals in seeking compliance — as opposed to punishment and attacks on the people to force compliance,” the Kenya office of Amnesty International said in a statement posted on Twitter Monday night.
Kenya has reported 151,523 coronavirus cases and 2,519 deaths so far in the pandemic, and is in the midst of a third major wave of infections. The authorities increased restrictions last month in an effort to slow the virus’s spread, including curbs on movement in and out of Nairobi and four other counties. Places of worship and bars were closed and sporting and recreational activities suspended.
Britain barred the entry of most travelers from Kenya on April 9, and the United States has advised its citizens not to travel to the country because of Covid and security concerns.
The Netherlands will resume its use of Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine from Wednesday, Dutch health minister Hugo de Jonge has announced following the European drug regulator’s statement earlier on Tuesday.
“The Johnson & Johnson vaccine can be used as planned and we’ll start using it tomorrow”, De Jonge said at a news conference, a few hours after the European Medicines Agency stated that the overall benefits of the vaccine outweigh any risks.
The Netherlands received its first shipment of 79,200 doses from the company on 12 April but has yet to use the vaccine.
The Amsterdam-based EMA said that its safety committee had concluded a warning should be added to the vaccine’s product information, but that the shot’s benefits outweighed its risks.
Its review comes after eight instances of serious cases of unusual blood clots associated with low levels of blood platelets, including one death, were reported in the US. More than seven million people have received J&J’s vaccine.
· India reported its highest single-day death toll of the pandemic, 1,761 fatalities, as health officials prepared to make everyone over age 18 in the country eligible for a vaccine starting on May 1. Questions persist over whether Indian vaccine manufacturers can meet the demand or whether the government can procure significant quantities of foreign-made doses to rapidly expand its inoculation effort. Indian officials have said that mass vaccinations may be the only way to slow what is now the world’s most severe outbreak, with an average of nearly 200,000 new infections recorded daily for the past week.
· President Andrés Manuel López Obrador of Mexico publicly received AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 vaccine on Tuesday, touting its safety after several countries limited its use after rare cases of blood clots, Reuters reported. Mexico issued emergency use of the AstraZeneca vaccine in January. As of Tuesday, about 9 percent of Mexicans have received at least one dose and about 3 percent are fully vaccinated, according to a New York Times database.
· Prime Minister Mark Rutte of the Netherlands announced Tuesday that his country would ease monthslong lockdown measures though it continues to grapple with high numbers of cases, according to Reuters. Starting April 28, a nationwide curfew will be lifted and bars and restaurants will be allowed to serve small groups outdoors from between noon and 6 p.m. About 7,800 cases have been recorded daily in the Netherlands for the past week.
· In Greece, a Coast Guard spokesman said on Monday that a Greek cargo ship traveling to Colombia from Egypt had been quarantined off Crete after a 55-year-old Filipino sailor was found dead in his cabin and others tested positive for the coronavirus.
