For the first time in five months, subway trains are slowly beginning to come back into service in India.
All public transport, including suburban trains, was suspended when the country announced a nationwide lockdown on March 24, amid a growing coronavirus epidemic.
The trains resumed operations as infections surged to a fresh daily high of 90,802 new cases Monday that saw India surpass Brazil as the country with the second-highest number of total cases, after the United States.
India now has 4,204,613 confirmed cases of Covid-19, including 71,642 deaths.
Despite the rising number of infections, the government announced on August 29 that subway trains would resume in cities from September 7 in a "graded manner".
Delhi, Noida, Chennai, Kochi, Bangalore, Jaipur, Hyderabad, Gujarat, Kolkata and Lucknow metros will begin resuming services gradually from Monday, with a goal of full capacity by September 12.
Maharashtra, including the financial capital of Mumbai, will continue to suspend metro services until October, according to a statement from the Ministry of Housing and Urban affairs.
Only asymptomatic passengers will be allowed to travel in the metros, while wearing of face masks will be mandatory and cashless transactions encouraged to help contain the spread of coronavirus, according to guidelines issued by the ministry.

The United Kingdom has recorded 2,988 new Covid-19 cases in a 24-hour period -- the highest daily number since May, according to government figures published on Sunday.
The UK’s total number of recorded cases now stands at 347,152.
In addition, two Covid-19 patients have died, bringing the UK government's official death toll to 41,551.
In response to the new figures, Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon tweeted: "Cases rising across the UK - 2988 being reported today compared to 1813 yesterday. This reminds us again of the need to be very vigilant and comply with all the facts."
Comparisons should be made with caution because the number of tests being processed has increased since May.

Northeastern University has dismissed 11 students after they were found violating the school's public health protocols, the school said in a statement.
The students were part of the N.U.in Program, a study abroad experience for first-year students, the university said. The program was modified because of the coronavirus pandemic, and over 800 students are staying in two-person rooms at a Westin Hotel less than one mile from the school's main campus in Boston, Massachusetts.
The 11 students were found together in a room at the Westin on Wednesday night, the school said. The students and their parents were told Friday they must vacate the hotel within 24 hours and that they are required to undergo Covid-19 testing at Northeastern.
"Northeastern and its community of students, faculty, and staff take violations of health and safety protocols very seriously," said Madeleine Estabrook, senior vice chancellor for student affairs at Northeastern. "Cooperation and compliance with public health guidelines is absolutely essential ... Testing negative for COVID-19 is not enough."

The conflict in Yemen between the Houthi group based in the north and an internationally recognised government in the south shows no signs of ceasing, despite the coronavirus crisis.
Nearly six months since coronavirus spread in Yemen, the BBC is the first international broadcaster to reach the country to see how people are dealing with the pandemic.

Jerusalem's Hadassah hospital has been recruiting recovered Covid-19 patients to volunteer inside its coronavirus wards to help patients there.
Under the pilot scheme, they visit patients in moderate or serious condition, who would otherwise be in isolation. The volunteers help the patients eat or just lend a listening ear.
The hospital believes the project to be the first of its kind in the world. And it is likely to be closely watched, given the still unclear science on how much antibody immunity recovered Covid-19 patients have.
BBC's Middle East correspondent Tom Bateman reports.

Britain has recorded its highest daily number of new coronavirus cases since May, with 2,988 new infections announced on Sunday.
Like other European countries, the U.K. is seeing the number of infections rise as society reopens after lockdown.
Some of the increase can be accounted for by expanded testing, which is identifying people who have mild or no symptoms. The number of hospital admissions and deaths has so far not shown a corresponding rise. Two new deaths were reported Sunday.
The increased number of cases comes as British schoolchildren return to class, a milestone in the resumption of normal life.
Greek health authorities also announced 144 new cases of the coronavirus Sunday — 24 from international arrivals, as well as four deaths. The total number of cases is 11,544, with 284 deaths. While the median age of those who got sick is 39. among those who have died, the median age is 78.
Although the latest numbers are well off the recent highs, when the number of new daily cases reached nearly 300, authorities are stepping up controls and fines for people not wearing masks in closed spaces or not keeping social distancing.
What's happening with coronavirus in Canada
As of 3:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, Canada had 131,895 confirmed and presumptive coronavirus cases. Provinces and territories listed 116,357 of those as recovered or resolved. A CBC News tally of deaths based on provincial reports, regional health information and CBC's reporting stood at 9,183.
Quebec reported 205 new cases on Sunday, for a total of 63,497. That's the highest daily count since June 6 and up from Saturday's total of 175, which was the province's highest daily increase in cases since late July.
Ontario reported an additional 158 cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, marking the 11th day of daily case counts in triple digits. The majority of the cases continue to be concentrated in Toronto, Peel Region, Ottawa, and York Region, which reported 49, 44, 21, and 16 cases respectively.
In the Americas, a small outbreak in Cuba's central Ciego de Avila province has prompted schools to re-close only a week after opening. Schools director Barbara Rodriguez said 75 of the province's 90 schools would return to televised teaching on Monday after the province reported 30 new infections with the new coronavirus over the past 15 days.
Mexico has recorded 122,765 deaths more than would be expected during the pandemic up to August, the health ministry said in a report on excess mortality rates, suggesting the country's true coronavirus toll could be much higher than reported. Mexico has recorded 67,326 confirmed coronavirus deaths, the world's fourth-highest death toll.
In Asia, India saw another record surge of 90,632 cases in the past 24 hours as infections spread to smaller cities and rural parts of the country. According to the Health Ministry, India's caseload reached 4,113,811, slightly short of Brazil's more than 4.12 million confirmed infections. Brazil is the second worst-hit country after the United States with more than 6.2 million cases.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced overnight curfews on some 40 cities and towns hit hard by the coronavirus but backed away from reported calls for full lockdowns after an uproar by powerful religious politicians. The government has been forced to take new action after failing to contain an outbreak that has claimed more than 1,000 lives and remains at record levels of new infections. The curfews will go into effect Monday at 7 p.m. and will be in effect until 5 a.m. It was not known how long they will remain in place.

In Africa, the continent has more than 1.2 million confirmed infections, with the majority of them — more than 635,000 — in South Africa.
Authorities in a number of African countries say they will follow the advice of health experts on allowing places of worship to resume normal operations — as some religious leaders argue that limits on religion could lead to a crisis of faith — with Zimbabwe encouraging people to pray at home and Nigeria limiting church services to an hour.
